What is the Ohio Light Opera?

The Ohio Light Opera was founded in 1979 as a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory company. By the turn of the century, the repertoire had grown to encompass 71 works from the operetta canon. Over the past 20 years, OLO has further expanded its repertoire—now at 146 titles—to include stage works of most of the greatest composers and lyricists of traditional American musical theater. Not only did innovators like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Lerner and Loewe drive the evolution of the Broadway musical, but—quite unlike the musicals of today—many of their show songs became popular hit tunes of their day. Join us in this casual cabaret performance as we look back at some of the most well-known and beloved songs from the mid-century musicals that OLO has produced. Songs featured include “The Impossible Dream,” “You’re Just in Love,” “My Funny Valentine,” “I’ve Got Rhythm,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

What is Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaboration?

It is one of the supreme frustrations of all operetta lovers that almost all the music from Gilbert and Sullivan’s first collaboration, the 1871 Thespis, is lost. Thus it is their 1875 one-act comic opera Trial by Jury that must serve as the springboard for understanding their musical and dramatic innovations and their domination ...

Is there handicap parking in the theater?

There is handicapped parking right in front of the theater. I have taken my stepmother with her walker and there are helpful attendants. Even though there is a downward pitch in the theater, there is plenty of room between rows. Go and enjoy yourself. They do excellent shows!

Is Ohio Light Opera good?

We have been going to Ohio Light Opera for the past nine years and have yet to be disappointed. They are so professional and we are always so impressed with the sets. The actors and actresses are first class as well. While the theater is small, you can be assured you will have a good seat no matter where you sit. If you desire a good, relaxing evening or matinee, don't wait another minute. Also, I'd like to add that every 4th of July the Ohio Light Opera orchestra gives a free performance at the Gazebo in down town. Again, never a disappointment.

Is OLO comfortable?

These performers could hold their own with any Broadway troupe, and they show their stuff in one of the most welcoming theaters anywhere. The seating is comfortable, the view is unobstructed no matter where you are, and the leg room is extraordinarily generous. If you like G &S and other light opera fare, you should spend a week or so with OLO. You'll be delighted.

Did Wooster Food Tours offer discount tickets?

So lucky to get internet offer when I did. Wooster Food Tours was just getting started and they offered discount tickets to the opera. What a surprise to do this on short notice. Great tour director Sara took us to places we have never been and tried food we never had even though we have been to Wooster many times and seen many plays here. Usually tickets aren't easy to get and the theatre appeared sold out. Extra bonus: Tuliapan, a Hungarian restaurant. Just love their open-faced sandwiches, homemade soups, wonderful Euro style bakery.
