Was the Magnolia a good venue?

First time at The Magnolia, but not my last. Terrific venue. Great sound, good views from everywhere. Enough concession stand to accommodate the crowd. And The Mavericks were just amazing, as always. We have seen them perform several times. Small venues really work so well for them. The entire crowd was thoroughly entertained for the entire evening.

Was the Mavericks a good band?

The Mavericks were as good or better than usual. The venue was terrific. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 45 MINUTES OF TORTURE WE HAD TO SIT THROUGH BEFORE THE MAVERICKS. The opening act, Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, was by far the worst, most untalented group of "musicians" possible. The lead singer couldn't sing, so he talked most of the lyrics, which by the way, sounded like he was making them up as he went along. The lead guitarist knew how to play basically two riffs, and there was so much distortion and effects on his amp that it was impossible to listen to. I don't know what the rhythm guitarist was doing. You never heard him. The bass player knew two notes, 1 and 5 if you're a musician. And the drummer used only two drums, the snare and the kick, with a monotonous "train" beat that made every song sound virtually the same. Brent "sang" everything in the lowest of baritone voices imaginable, making the great Johnny Cash sound like a pre-pubic choir boy. Brent even had a song which sounded like it was supposed to refer to this concert venue (San Diego) but kept mentioning Los Angeles is where he hung his hat. Everyone, save maybe for a few of his closest friends and relatives, were thoroughly discussed with this entire act from start to finish. The crowd was too polite for NOT booing them off the stage. However, one man was heard as he yelled in between songs "TERRIBLE!" It was the longest 45 minutes of my life and seemed like it would never end, but thankfully it did.
