What time is the CERN experiment?
After nearly four years of shutdown, extended by Covid-induced delays, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is about to kick off its third round of experiments: called, succinctly, Run 3. CERN will commemorate the launch with a livestream at 10:00 AM, Eastern time.
How long will CERN be on for?
The LHC is planned to run over the next 20 years, with several stops scheduled for upgrades and maintenance work.
What time is CERN turning on the LHC?
A new physics season is starting, with a broad and promising scientific programme in store. The launch of LHC Run 3 will be streamed live on CERN's social media channels and high-quality Eurovision satellite link starting at 4.00 p.m. (CEST) on 5 July.
What is CERN looking for 2022?
During the Large Hadron Collider's four-year experiment, scientists are hoping to find evidence of dark matter. As they fire up the machine, protons will spin at nearly the speed of light. The hope, researchers said, is that when they collide, it creates new particles resembling the properties of dark matter.
Why did CERN shut down?
Serge Claudet, head of the CERN Energy Management Commission, lately told The Wall Street Journal that CERN is making plans to shut down some of its eight particle accelerators, including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), to assure the stability of the electrical grid in Europe.
Is the Hadron Collider running now?
Run 3: third operational run (2022) LHC became operational again on 22 April 2022 with a new maximum beam energy of 6.8 TeV (13.6 TeV collision energy), which was first achieved on 25 April. It officially commenced its run 3 physics season on July 5, 2022. This round is expected to continue until 2026.
What time in Switzerland will CERN turn on?
The CERN's collider is going to be turned on on July 5 at 10 am ET, that is, 4 pm CEST. The entire event is also going to be live-streamed for people to watch.
When was the Hadron Collider turned on 2022?
22 April 20222022: Higgs10, LHC Run 3 and restart The world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), restarted on 22 April 2022 after more than three years for maintenance, consolidation and upgrade work.
What happens if the Hadron Collider goes wrong?
Such an explosion would completely obliterate a large metropolitan area. The surface effects, including an atmospheric shockwave would decimate everything for many kilometers around, and would send a blast of heat to incinerate everything in its path.
How long will CERN run 3 last?
The Run 3 at the LHC, planned to span for the next four years, has officially started and the CMS experiment is on its way to explore new undiscovered territories of particle physics. CERN press update: https://home.cern/news/news/cern/third-run-large-hadron-collider-has-su…
Is CERN trying to find dark matter?
With the switching back on of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) after a three-year hiatus, the giant particle accelerator has a new target set in its sights: the hunt for dark matter, the mysterious substance that must make up about 80% of all the matter in the universe, but which no one has ever seen.
Why is it called the God particle?
The Higgs boson is often called "the God particle" because it's said to be what caused the "Big Bang" that created our universe many years ago.

What will CERN do?
What is CERN's mission? At CERN, our work helps to uncover what the universe is made of and how it works. We do this by providing a unique range of particle accelerator facilities to researchers, to advance the boundaries of human knowledge.
What is run 3 CERN?
Run 3, a new period of data taking, begins in July 2022 for the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), after more than three years of upgrade and maintenance work.
A new schedule for the LHC and its successor | CERN
The CERN Management has presented a new calendar for future accelerator runs to the Council, which met on 12 December. Under the new schedule, the LHC will restart in May 2021, two months after the initially planned date, and Run 3 will be extended by one year, until the end of 2024. All of the equipment needed for the High-Luminosity LHC, the LHC’s successor, and its experiments will be ...
CERN’s particle accelerator starts up after a three-year hiatus
Two beams of protons zipped around the Large Hadron Collider on Friday, marking the return of the world’s largest particle accelerator after over three years on hiatus. The European Organisation ...

When will the 3rd LHC shutdown end?
No changes have been made to the schedule beyond 2022. The third long shutdown (LS3) will begin at the start of 2025 and end in mid-2027. This is when the equipment for the HL-LHC and its experiments will be installed. The HL-LHC will generate 10 times as many collisions as its predecessor! This will allow physicists to study known mechanisms, such as the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, in detail, and to observe possible very rare new phenomena. Accordingly, the upgrades to the LHC experiments will give them considerable potential for discovery.
When will the LHC start testing?
The new schedule for LS2 anticipates that the first test beams will circulate in the LHC at the end of September 2021, four months later than the date planned before the COVID-19 crisis. To give the LHC’s main experiments – ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb – time to complete their own upgrade programmes, Run 3 of the LHC will begin at the start of March 2022.
When will the LHC be cold?
The whole machine should be “cold” by spring 2021.
When did the second long shutdown start?
On 23 October, the CERN Management validated the new schedule for activities taking place during the second long shutdown (LS2), which began at the start of 2019. The schedule has had to be modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
